Kalamkari Paintings has two distinctive styles namely, Srikalahasti style - wherein the "kalam" or pen is used for freehand drawing of the subject & filling in the colors is entirely a hand work & Machlipatnam style – or ‘Pedana Kalamkari’ involves vegetable dyed block-painting of a fabric . This style flourishes at Kalahasti (near to Chennai) and at Masulipatnam (near to Hyderabad). It is done by using organic dyes on cloths & consists of scenes from Hindu mythology.
