Bengal Patachitra known for its brilliant play of colours, is an ancient folk art form of Nayagram village in West Midnapore, originally used as a visual device during the performance of a song or a narrative. Their stories depict Hindu mythology or history story. With changing times, the Patuas have crafted their scrolls reflecting social issues, such as literacy and environment. The paintings are traditionally made from handmade paper, backed with cloth. Indigenous plants and minerals are still used to create the paint, including turmeric, vermillion, and burnt rice. Sap of the bel (wood-apple) fruit is used as mordant. Patua painting are now available in different sizes, in order to meet the preference of today's times.
